5 An-lun Huang:Chinese Rhapsody #5

A rhapsody is a virtuosic concert form that typically incorporates folk melodies within a free structure, exemplified by Liszt's *Hungarian Rhapsodies* and Gershwin's *Rhapsody in Blue*. An-lun Huang's series of *Chinese Rhapsodies* follows this tradition. His popular No. 2 is a set piece in Chinese piano competitions, notably performed by Lang Lang to win first prize at the 1994 International Tchaikovsky Youth Piano Competition.

This *Chinese Rhapsody No. 5* (2002) is a major work for erhu (a two-stringed Chinese instrument) and orchestra, dedicated to the erhu master George Gao. Its thematic material is drawn from the songs of Xiao-min, an extraordinary young woman from Henan province. With no formal musical training, she has composed over a thousand songs since the 1990s, which have gained immense popularity across China.

The music is structured in four continuous sections, intertwining Xiao-min's melodies with the hymn *Near the Cross* by William H. Doane. It opens with the hymn, followed by the erhu presenting a lyrical Xiao-min theme. A vibrant second section yields to a deeply expressive third movement, featuring a technically demanding cadenza. The brilliant finale incorporates several of Xiao-min's most beloved songs, building to a climactic conclusion.

The world premiere was given in Moscow in June 2002 by George Gao and the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra under Tak-ng Lai. Gao's dazzling, Paganini-like performance set a new standard for the erhu. The piece is now an official competition piece in China. The violin version was premiered in Chicago (2009) and later performed at the Berlin Philharmonie (2012) by Huang Bin, gold medalist of the Paganini International Violin Competition.
