Septet-7canadian folksongs in chinese style

SEVEN CANADIAN FOLK SONGS
IN CHINESE STYLE

Septet for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass and Piano
An-lun Huang, op.36 (1986)

James Campbell, the famous Canadian clarinets, commissioned a septet from Huang for the China
tour of the Canadian Chamber Group in 1984.  Campbell suggested that An-lun combine the folk music of Canada and China in this new work.  The result was the septet,” Seven Canadian Folk Songs in Chinese style", became the most exciting hit piece of the tour.  The world premiere was taken place at the Festival of the Sound at Parry Sound, Ontario, before the China tour.  It was performed by seven leading Canadian musicians, Moshe Hammer(violin), Steven Dann(viola), Sophie Rolland(cello), Joel Quarrington(bass), Anton Kuerti(piano), Robert Aitken(flute) and James Campbell(clarinet).  The piece was so warmly received both in Canada and China that a record has been released. It was also the most successful piece for the "Canada-Hong Kong Festival", Hong Kong, 91.

In addition, in 2002, successfully, the Canadian Symphoniatta performed its orchestral version, conducted by Tak-ng Lai, in Paris, France.

However, Huang found the musical similarity of the two nations--the pentatonic mode.  Written in Chinese idea, the septet gives the opportunity both to the Chinese and Canadian audiences to find themselves in each other through the Seven Canadian folk songs.  The septet is divided into seven "attacca" parts.  No.1 begins the music into a very quiet British Columbia Indian folk tune, performed by flute and clarinet, and occasionally, the piano gives few chords to support them.  No.2 comes a Alberta Indian lyric song with all instruments.  The folk songs of No.3 and 4 are Ontario Forest man’s old tunes which bring the music to the exciting part.  The No.5 is a Saskatchewan Indian traditional tune, the "war song".  Its heavy dynamic shows the typical native Canadian rhythmic patterns.  Wooden spoon is a Canadian folk instrument.  The clarinet player plays it in No.6 of a vivacious Quebec folk dance.  And in a Newfoundland lyric song, No.7, the septet goes to its brilliant ending.

Ballet,  “THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL” ,

AN-LUN HUANG, Op.24, (1977)

Based on the fairy tale “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875), the famous Danish writer,  the Beijing Ballet School of China commissioned An-Lun Huang to compose this ballet in 1977.  The play was written by Zhang Dun-yi, and the choreographers were Wu Fu-kang and Huang Buo-hong.  The premiere took place in Beijing in 1977.  It was performed by the school and the Central Opera House Orchestra, conducted by Zheng Xiao-ying.  The music is written in Nineteen Century-Romantic style with some strong Scandinavian flavor.  Margot Fonteyn, one of the most important ballet dancers of our age, claimed that “the composer has composed the very, very, very good music for this ballet ! “  She then produced a movie of it, which has been broadcasted by the PBS of U.S.A. in early of eighties.  Since the  great success of the premiere, this ballet and its music have been widely performed and warmly received.  A tape of it was also released in China.
This is the story of the ballet:
In a little Danish town  in the nineteenth century, Betty, a little girl who lost her mother, was selling matches along the street during Christmas time.  The sound of the church bell reminded her that the time was quite late, but she was unable to go home until she completed her job.  An old man came to light the street lights.  He gave her some money and left.  Betty tried to sell her matches to a carriage, but the carriage just ran away.  Snow fell, cold and hungry, she lit a match on the wall to warm herself. A group of  “Fire Fairies” appeared.  They danced around her and got her warm.  Since they disappeared so quickly, Betty lit another match.  She saw a big dining room with a beautiful Christmas tree and a lot of food.  While some bus boys were handing her a piece of roasted goose, the typical Danish Christmas food, a nobleman in a portrait hanging on the wall suddenly moved.  Everything disappeared again.  Betty immediately lit the third match, a “Swan Lake” with a beautiful garden appeared.  She met her mother with tears because the mother had passed away for years.  Mother got a pair of little red shoes for her as the Christmas gift and danced with her.  The “Portrait nobleman” brought the mother out of the scene.  Everything was gone but the snow storm.  The church bell sounded again, with the morning dawn, the old man came to extinguish the street lights.  He found the frozen body of the little girl.

A Symphony in A flat Major "Phoenix": c Of The Symphonic Concert #2, Op. 47 c

 The “Symphonic Concert No.2”, is Huang’s second serial symphonic work in a large form.

----- The first part, Op.47a, is "The Symphonic Overture No. 2", the second part, Op.47b, is the " Violin Concerto in B" in three movements.  They are all published by Amazon.

And the third part, Op.47c, is this "Symphony in A flat major 'Phoenix'" in 5 movements [62 minutes]

 The first two parts of the “Symphonic Concert No.2" were premiered in Beijing by the China Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1997.  However, the composing of the third part has been delayed. The reason is the author's Chinese heart: for thousands of years, the word "deep disaster" has been following this nation, but, however, the Chinese finally rise in the east of the world from the deadly dark.  How can the composer present this symphony in the most appropriate form, and bring blessings to the world?  Until the idea of "Phoenix sigh" inspired the author's rolling music.

  As a result, the structure of the entire symphony is: a total of five movements, the order is:

  1. ESSENCE Andante con molto
  2. SPIRIT   Allegro assai
  3. DIVINITY   Larghetto
  4. PEACE   Vivo
  5. REVIVAL 腾飞  Allegro assai con brio

 The fifth movement of this symphony, "Revival", is the end of the entire “Symphonic Concert No. 2". Its “Phoenix’s Flame of Fire” symbolizes the composer's powerful belief in the whole composition: "Defeat death to obtain the eternal life".

 This point has a distinct manifestation in this final movement: from the beginning of the "world turmoil" to the evolution of the huge contrast of the brilliant chorus of the “Phoenix"; from the " disaster" making the Phoenix smashes  into the fire of hell from the high heaven; its shocking description of self-immolation to the sound of the "resurrection" and the vitality of the folk instruments which simulate the voice of life from afar; and from the brilliant fire of the phoenix soars to the sky with roar of the organ at the end.

 The themes of all of the previous music are also interrelated.  All of the players join the forces to create the powerful music that " The Chinese symphony has never been sounded like this before, and it is all about achieving a brilliant future”, the critic said in “People’s Music”, the major music magazine in China, 2009.

Symphony No.3 in b flat, opus 62, (2005) (with the Fanfare No.3)

2005 is the 10th anniversary of the Little Golden Sail Youth Symphony Orchestra of Zhongguancun No. 2 Primary School in Haidian District, Beijing.  At the commission of Principal Yang Gang, the composer wrote this symphony to celebrate, and dedicated it to his father, Prof.Fei-lih Huang, who has devoted the lives to music education. This symphony is also dedicated to all teachers.

This symphony is traditionally composed in four movements:

In the first movement, a solemn and comfortable Adagio introduced its fiery Allegro assai, showing the boundless vitality of youth;

The title of Moderato in the second movement is "Song to all Teachers", and the love and gratitude to the teacher are all in it. The main melody of the movement is selected from the "Children's Sight Singing and Ear Training Course" compiled by the composer's mother, grandma Zhao Fangxing who devoted her whole live to the musical education, too.  Her melody in the middle part is the kind children's song "Good Auntie, Good Auntie, Auntie is Like Mother!";

The third movement is a Scherzo, in which the melody is selected from the "Children's Sight Singing and Ear Training Course" compiled by Grandma Zhao Fangxing, too, wishing all children a dream come true;

The fourth movement Allegro andante, alla march is the composer’s "FANFARE No. 3" for the youth orchestra and choir.   However, the lyric is written by Mr. Tao Xiping.  As one of the founders of the Golden Sail Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tao Xiping's vigorous verses in his poems also sang everyone's aspirations: "Don't be afraid of strong winds or huge waves. Let the horn of victory spread throughout the world!"

 Opus Klassik Awards 2019- Chamber Music (trio)

An-lun Huang: Piano Trios 1 & 2

Bin Huang (violin), Alexander Suleiman (cello), Yubo Zhou (piano)

PREMIERE RECORDING An-lun Huang's piano trios dazzlingly demonstrate that contemporary music in no way has to be accessible only to a sworn community of experts. With his skill this Chinese-Canadian composer combines the best traditions from several world regions to produce a euphonious and harmonious whole - and does so with great class. The premiere ensemble for the Trio No. 2 from 2015 lends this first recording a special measure of authenticity. As a composer and as a teacher An-lin Huang is sought after throughout the world. His Chinese Rhapsody No. 2 marked the beginning of a breathtaking career: it was with this work that Huang's fellow Chinese musician Lang Lang played his way to the first prize in the youth section of the legendary Tchaikovsky Competition. Music is a tradition in the master's family: Huang's father was one of Paul Hindemith's last students at Yale.
